The Indian contingent came into the Commonwealth Games with a simple agenda: to win as many golds as possible. And now they have another one to show for it.

This time the women’s lawn bowls four’s team has created history in the tournament. They became the first Indian team to win a gold in this particular sport.

The Indian team consisting of Lovely Choubey, Pinki, Nayanmoni Saikia, and Rupa Rani Tirkey stood firm against all odds to win the first ever medal for India.

They broke into the scene after an empathic victory over New Zealand. In a closely contested match where the Kiwis at one point had the lead by 0-5, India came back to make it 7-7. And then ended up winning the game by 16-13 after the end-14.

Indian women put great performance to win maiden Gold at Lawn Bowls event

This victory destined the team for a certain silverware. But the women in blue were hungry for gold. Hence, they put up an excellent show against touch Protean opponents in the finals on Tuesday.

In the final, India suffered a mid-match slump. After getting off to a great start, they lost their lead by two points. At 10-8, South Africa looked determined to win the gold. But the Indian women once again found their strides and gave their protean opponents no room to breathe. They eventually won the final 17-10.

With this victory, India’s gold medal tally went up to 4. Earlier, they had a great time out on the wrestling stage, from where they procured three golds.

Later the Table tennis team won their final against Singapore to make it five golds for India.
