Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty clinch doubles title at Swiss Open 2023

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, India’s top-ranked doubles pair, won their first title of the 2023 season at the Swiss Open 2023 in Basel. The duo defeated Ren Xiang Yu and Tang Qiang of China in straight games in the final on Sunday, March 26, to clinch the doubles crown.

Satwik and Chirag showed signs of return to peak form in their victory at the Swiss Open. The duo was up to the task from the word go despite their marathon three-game semi-final battle as they never allowed Ren and Tang to take the upper hand. The 6th-ranked pair was in control of the match, defeating the World No. 21 in 54 minutes.

The Indian stars, seeded No. 2, were in control of the match despite a strong defensive show from their opponents. Satwik and Chirag had a comfortable lead at 18-13 in the first game but allowed the Chinese pair to make a comeback. However, the Indian shuttlers held their nerves to close out the first game and seal the early advantage.

Second Game Victory

The second game was a more closely-fought affair as the Chinese pair raced away with the early points. Satwik and Chirag took the lead but allowed the Chinese pair to claw back and make it 16-16. The Chinese pair saved three match points, but it was not enough as Satwik and Chirag won another crucial moment to win the title.

Satwiksairaj was solid both at the front and backcourt while Chirag Shetty was brilliant at the net and showcased his improved prowess to turn defense into attack. India’s doubles coach Mathias Boe made sure that the two young shutters were keeping their calm in tough points. Boe jumped in delight when Satwik and Chirag converted their fourth match point, denying Ren and Tang a third game. Chirag took off his shirt and celebrated the big win in Basel.

It was Satwik and Chirag’s first title in Basel and their first one on the tour since their French Open Super 750 triumph in October 2022. The pair will be hoping it’s the first of many in 2023 after putting behind the disappointment of an early exit at the All England Open earlier in March. The World No. 6 pair won three titles in 2022, including the Commonwealth Games gold medal. They also finished with a bronze medal at the World Championships.

Cheering the Indian Badminton Fans

Satwik and Chirag brought cheer to the Indian badminton fans after the early exits of PV Sindhu, Lakshya Sen, Kidambi Srikanth, HS Prannoy, Gayatri Gopichand, and Jolly Treesa in Basel. It was an excellent performance by Satwik and Chirag, who will be looking to build on this victory for the rest of the season.

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty played exceptionally well to clinch their first title of the 2023 season at the Swiss Open 2023 in Basel. The duo will be hoping to continue their winning momentum and achieve more success in the upcoming tournaments.
