Andreas Christensen: Premier League giants Newcastle United want FC Barcelona defender in January transfer window

FC Barcelona defender Andreas Christensen may have a new club at the end of this month as several English heavyweights are keeping an eye on his situation at the Spanish giants, with Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United being one of them.

Andreas Christensen- Defensive stalwart for FC Barcelona

Andreas Christensen had been one of the undisputed starters for Spanish giants FC Barcelona last season. After plying his trade for Chelsea, the Danish international had joined Xavi’s brigade and had impressed the club board with his immediate feature. Owing to his exuberance on the defensive sector which includes clearing the ball to scoring from direct corner kicks, the tall Dane had always delivered to his name. In his debut season, he had formed a seasoned quartet of Barcelona’s defense which was summoned by the name of “B-A-C-K”, comprising the likes of La Masia youngster Balde, Uruguayan wall Ronald Araujo, Christensen and French superstar Joules Kounde, and had contributed to the success of Barcelona’s exquisite defensive record, leading them to a La Liga title, after a hiatus of four years.

But, this season, with the advent of Inigo Martinez and Cancelo, Christensen has found himself on the bench often, as he has been competing for starts with Kounde and Araujo, thus leading to a slight decline in his importance. According to latest reports, Barca would look to offload their star with several Premier League clubs eyeing him as their player.

Newcastle United emerges as frontrunner

According to news outlets in England and relayed by Mundo Deportivo, Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United would be eyeing a January move for the defensive metronome as they would look to bolster their recently exposed defensive frailties.

Eddie Howe’s men had started off this season quite impressively, but recent poor performances, with several conceded goals at the last minutes have seen them drop down to ninth spot, thus compelling Eddie Howe to look for defensive options, which would help him reinforce some enthusiasm into that sector.

As a result, Christensen has emerged as a top target for the Magpies, who have had held a long-term interest in the Danish.

But, according to Newcastle United’s latest Financial Fair Play problems, they would be unable to cash-in for the star, as Christensen is bound to FC Barcelona’s contract till 2026. So, it would be highly possible for Magpies to monitor his situation, but it would not be ruled out as Christensen would be looking for increased game time in the coming months.
