Weight lifting has been India’s forte in the commonwealth games 2022. And they have another gold medal in the male 73 kg category to show for it. This time it is yet another new name in the form of Achinta Sheuli, who won the third gold for India.

Just like his contemporaries, Jeremy Lalrenunga and Mirabai Chanu, he too smashed Commonwealth Game records to win his first gold in the tournament.

It was a tough competition, fought primarily between India’s Sheuli and Malaysia’s Erry Hidayat Muhammad.

Sheuli got off to a flier in the snatch event as he broke two Commonwealth games records on the trot. He successfully attempted 140kg and 143kg to break the Game record for the snatch.

Moving on to the clean and jerk event, the lifter from Kolkata managed to lift 143 and 170. Hence taking his total tally to 303kg. This, however, did not confirm his gold. Since India faltered in his final attempt, his Malaysian counterpart had the opportunity to clinch the gold.

To reach the glory, Muhammad went for a 176kg C&J which would have won him gold. He couldn’t complete the lift and had to settle for a silver. Hence, Achinta Sheuli registered India’s third gold and sixth overall medal in weightlifting.
