Virat Kohli, arguably the best batsman for Royal Challengers Bangalore, has broken his teammate Chris Gayle’s IPL record for most hundreds. Kohli Scores centuryin IPL after 4 years

This was Kohli’s maiden century of the current campaign; he now has the same number of three-figure scores in the league (six) as his former teammate Chris Gayle.

The RCB opener had been in good form but was being scrutinised for his sluggish starts; however, on Thursday night, he disproved them by scoring his century in 62 deliveries.

Notably, all of the 34-year-old batsman’s first 16 runs in the innings came from boundaries. He struck two fours off the opening two deliveries of the RCB innings against Bhuvneshwar then smacked spinner Abhishek Sharma and left-arm bowler T Natarajan for two more. In the first six overs, Kohli took advantage of the powerplay by scoring 32 runs off just 20 deliveries.

The batsman eventually sped to fifty runs in just 36 balls while maintaining a strong partnership with captain Faf du Plessis, who has been in outstanding form this season.

In the end, Kohli was out for exactly 100, leaving the pitch as soon as he reached the milestone. Bhuvneshwar Kumar took the RCB star’s wicket in the 18th over.

Virat Kohli repeats history smashes a century on a cosmic day (18 May)

On this day, May 18, back in 2016, Kohli had smashed an inspiring century with four stitches on his left hand. Four of Kohli’s IPL centuries came in the same season, when he amassed an incredible 973 runs in one edition back in 2016. His other century came in the 2019 season.

It’s interesting to note that ever since he began competing at a higher level, Kohli has sported the jersey with the number 18 printed behind it for both India and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the IPL.

When asked about the significance behind the number and his cosmic connection with it, Kohli explained on Star Sports: “There has to be a cosmic connection with this number. I find it quite surreal even now to be honest when I see so many people wearing my jersey number and name. It’s quite surreal because I never imagined that I would be in this position one day. I was a kid wanting to wear my hero’s jersey at a certain given point.”

“To be honest 18 started off just being a number that was given to me when I opened that first India U19 jersey. I never asked for it, it was just given to me. But then it ended up becoming a very important number in my life. My debut came for India on 18th of August, 2008. My father passed away on the 18th of December, 2006. Two of the most significant dates in my life happened to be 18,” he added.
