SA20 League: Joburg Super Kings get back to winnings ways with a thrilling 6-run win over Pretoria Capitals

Match 11 of the inaugural SA20 went down to the wire with exciting final moments. But it was the Joburg Super Kings who held their nerves and ended their two-match losing streak.

After being invited to bat first by Wayne Parnell of Pretoria Capitals, the Super Kings batters put their foot in the accelerator right from the word go. They had a point to prove after losing two consecutive matches. Captain Faf du Plessis was looking in fine touch for his 16-ball 27 runs with five fours.

Hendriks and du Plooy stablize JSK inning

Soon after his dismissal, Reeza Hendriks and Leus du Plooy took things at their hands with the later being the aggressor. Leus du Plooy was fluent in his stroke play and took the attack to the Pretoria Capitals bowlers.

He struck a brilliant half century and scored a brilliant unbeaten innings of 75 runs from 40 balls with 7 fours and 5 sixes. Riding on his back, the Super Kings posted a competitive total of 168/6. du Plooy’s innings helded the innings together.

His other partner Reeza Hendricks, struggled a bit to score at a fluent rate. He played second fiddle in the partnership by scoring 45 runs however it came from 50 balls.

Eathan Bosch was the pick of the bowlers from the Capitals with economical figures of 3/12.

Lack of big partnerships cost Capitals the game

In reply, the Capitals were in hunt right till the end.  They took the match till the wire with cameos from their batting line-up. Phil Salt 29, Shane Dadswell 22 and Jimmy Neesham with 24, all got starts but failed to capitalize on it. It was due to some clinical bowling from left-arm spinner Aaron Phangiso who picked up wickets at regular intervals.

Thus, restricting the Capitals to form big partnerships in the middle. However, a six of the last ball in the 19th over from Adil Rashid, made the game interesting leaving the Capitals with 10 runs to win in the last over.

But with no top order batsman at the end, the Capitals could manage only 162/9 from their 20 overs and lost the match by the barest of margin by 6 runs. Much to the relief of the Super Kings, they ended their 2-match losing streak.

Aaron Phangiso was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 4/32 and was the game changer in the middle overs. Windies pair of Alzarri Joseph and Romario Shepherd contributed well with the ball with two wickets each for the Super Kings. Leus du Plooy was awarded the man of the match for his match winning innings of 75 unbeaten runs.
