Rohit Sharma returns to lead India in home series against Windies; Sundar to make comeback too

Indian team’ recent humbling defeat against South Africa came as a shock to many. They were supposed to be runaway favourites, especially in the ODIs, where they faced a whitewash by the hosts.

This led to several questions being raised against the team’s performance. The middle-order again let them down, which eventually led to a steep decline in the series. However, one question nagged everyone more than anything: Was KL Rahul an apt captain?

The young gun was filling in the shoes for Rohit Sharma, who picked up a niggle ahead of the South Africa series. Following this, he was ruled out of the entire tour. And the recent sacking of Virat Kohli as the limited over captain saw an inexperienced Rahul leading the team.

The sight was not pleasant as he failed to live up to expectations. Not only did the responsibility seem to be too much for him on the field, it somehow seemed to have hampered his batting abilities as well. The flamboyant KL Rahul, to which all of us are accustomed, was nowhere to be seen in the ODIs.

Indian fans can finally put the past in the past, though, according to resources, Rohit Sharma is said to take the mantle from Rahul in the upcoming series.

Rohit Sharma returns to the squad for home series

The experienced Rohit Sharma, whom India seemed to be missing a little too much in the South Africa series, is returning to the team. He was last seen in action in the home series against New Zealand in November.

India royally defeated a belittled Kiwis squad to mark the start of a post-Kohli-Shastri era. Though they have failed to capitalise on it in the South African tour, they will be looking for redemption under Rohit’s captaincy.

Rohit, however, won’t be the only player returning in the squad. According to The Hindu, the Indian selection panel has also decided to add a few other players to the team. It includes the like Washington Sundar and Rishi Dhawan.

The only thing palpable in the Indian performance, beyond Rahul’s lack of captaincy and middle-order contribution, was a sixth bowling option.

Such was the condition that Shreyas Iyer, a pure batter, was seen rolling his arm over for his country when other bowlers were bashed out of the park.

Keeping this lack of bowling options and Jadeja’s injury in mind, the selection panel has decided to pick up two all-rounders. While Sundar is returning to claim his position, Dhawan is included in the squad after his outstanding performance in the Vijay Harare Trophy for Himachal Pradesh.

It will be interesting to see how the Indian squad looks against West Indies. There will be a considerable number of players rested for the workload management.

Some sources also claim that Hardik Pandya will be back on the radar of selection.  None of this is confirmed at the moment. The only confirmed news from the centre is that Rohit Sharma, Sundar, and Rishi Dhawan will be a part of the squad.
