Nikhat Zareen was born to Mohammad Jameel Ahmed and Parveen Sultana in the city of Nizamabad, Telangana. She completed her primary education at Nirmala Hrudaya Girls High School in Nizamabad and is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree at AV College in Hyderabad.
Introduced to boxing by her father at an early age, Zareen showed promise and dedication to the sport from the onset. Under the guidance of her father, she began training and soon caught the attention of coaches and selectors with her natural talent and determination.
Boxing Career
Zareen’s journey in boxing began to gain momentum when she was inducted into the Sports Authority of India in Vishakhapatnam to train under Dronacharya awardee, IV Rao, in 2009. Her breakthrough came in 2010 when she was declared the ‘golden best boxer’ at the Erode Nationals, setting the stage for her future success in the sport.
In 2011, Zareen clinched a gold medal at the AIBA Women’s Junior and Youth World Boxing Championships held in Turkey, marking her arrival on the international stage. Her stellar performances earned her recognition and accolades, including a silver medal at the 2014 Youth World Boxing Championships in Bulgaria and a gold medal at the 2019 Strandja Memorial Boxing Tournament in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Zareen’s success in domestic competitions paved the way for her illustrious international career. In 2022, she made history by winning the gold medal at the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in Istanbul, Turkey, becoming the fifth Indian women’s boxer to achieve this feat. She followed this up with another gold medal at the 2023 New Delhi IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships, solidifying her status as a world-class athlete.
In addition to her world championship titles, Zareen also clinched gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where she defeated Carly McNaul of Northern Ireland in the light flyweight category.
