Nepal Cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane convicted of rape by Kathmandu District Court
Former captain of the Nepal Cricket Team, Sandeep Lamichhane, has been found guilty of raping an 18-year-old girl, according to the ruling by the Kathmandu District Court on December 29. The final hearings for the case commenced on December 24, and a verdict was delivered by a single bench of Judge Shishir Raj Dhakal. The court will determine Lamichhane’s jail term in the next hearing, along with any fines or compensation that may be imposed.
Lamichhane, who has been on bail since January 12, participated in various tournaments for Nepal recently. His release on bail was ordered by the Patan High Court in response to a review petition filed by Lamichhane. A joint bench of judges Dhruva Raj Nanda and Ramesh Dahal ordered his release on a bail bond of Rs 2 million with certain conditions.

The case against Lamichhane was filed by the Kathmandu District Attorney’s Office in September 2022, accusing him of raping a 17-year-old girl on August 21. The cricketer is charged under Section 219 of the Criminal Code 2074. The victim initially filed the complaint on September 6 at the Metropolitan Police Circle, Gaushala, while Lamichhane was in Trinidad and Tobago playing in the Caribbean Premier League.
Lamichhane was arrested on October 6, 2022, upon his arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport. The district attorney, in the chargesheet, demanded compensation from Lamichhane for the victim’s alleged physical and mental torture. Following the filing of the chargesheet, his bank account and property were frozen.
