FIFA 2022: Lionel Messi becomes Argentina’s all-time leading goalscorer in World Cup history

Lionel Messi has done is yet again, he has broken another record. And this time it is something that he would have wanted for the whole of his career.

Messi has now become the all-time leading goal scorer for Argentina in the FIFA World Cups. He overtook Gabriel Batistuta in the semi-final against Croatia on Tuesday.

Now Lionel Messi has a total of 11 goals to his name, while Batistuta has just 10. He levelled the record in the quarterfinal game against Netherlands, in which he netted a penalty.

In the semi final he made the record his own in the same style from the spot. A clean strike in the top right corner beat the Croatian goalkeeper Livaovic who was the favourite to save the same.

It was an important goal in the context of the game as it changed the complexion of the same in Argentina’s favour and also broke the deadlock.

The game was played for most of the part in the Argentina’s half. But a short corner cost Croatia dearly, as Argentina were able to break free. It was Julian Alvarez with the ball in the box that was brought down by the keeper.

This resulted in an instant penalty kick according to the referee. The VAR had a look at it and there was no reversing that decision. Hence, stepped up the best player in the Argentine colours and put the issue to rest.
