They Spanish international is currently the highest earner at Old Trafford with £375,000-a-week, and now is being reported that he might be leaving his long-time club on a free transfer after his contract expires later next year in June 2023.

Controversy entangled in the last month, Erik Ten Hag, United manager is murmured to be luring in new prospective goalkeepers, owing to which, United higher-ups over considering the 12-month extension option for their long-term keeper De Gea’s contract, who personally would prefer staying.

This might also be stemming from a couple of high-profile blunders committed by De Gea at the start of the season, but despite that he has pulled himself back on track and has been near to flawless with more than a few fantastic saves in all competitions.

Ten Hag considering Yann Sommer to replace De Gea

However, even after all efforts from the 32-year-old, Ten Hag might still be eying up an upgrade from De Gea. Despite his amazing goal reflexes, the keeper lacks modern shot-stopping skills mixed with strong distribution skills.

The Spanish goalkeeper has lodged merely 18 passes in each league game this season, in comparison to which, United’s new target for the position, Yann Sommer, has been going strong with 45 accurate passes registered for Bayer Leverkusen in Bundesliga.

This might be the crucial deciding factor which has led the club to this decision of parting ways with him in the coming summer. This, mangled with his expensive fee compared to their prospective Sommer, who just earns £36,000-a-week, might be a decisive factor for United.

Although De Gea has improved greatly in his overall distribution skills, mobility, and stats this season compared to the previous terms, this still might not be enough to convince the United higher-ups, especially Ten Hag, who is infamous for benching ‘the’ Cristiano Ronaldo.
