India won another historical medal on Wednesday, as Saurav Ghoshal won the bronze in squash singles by defeating James Willstrop of England. This is India’s first ever singles medal in Squash at Commonwealth Games.

It was a one-sided game fought between Ghoshal and his British friend Willstrop. And the Indian emerged victorious at the other end with a landslide victory. He defeated James 11-6, 11-1, and 11-4 to claim this historic victory.

The Indian physically outclassed the 38-year-old Englishman in every corner of the game. He had better court coverage on his opponent and better shot placement too. Hence giving him an edge over Willstrop.

The world no 15 broke down after winning a medal in what is presumably his final CWG campaign. This was his first singles medal, but not really the first medal in the sport. Earlier in 2018, he won a doubles silver with Dipika Pallikal.

In a post-match conversation, Ghoshal said, “I am very very happy; it’s a historic day for Indian squash. To be able to do this against a player of his calibre is very special. I’m happy that after all these years, I have been able to win this.”

Ghosh dedicated the medal to his grandfather, who passed away in 2020.

Earlier in the day, India’s squash double team also made it to the pre-quarterfinals. They defeated the experienced Sri Lankan team 8-11, 11-4, and 11-3.

Now the whole country will be hoping for the duo of Chinappa and Sandhu to win another medal.
