Charu Sharma: story from lunch table to IPL auction

Life is full of whimsical happenings; we’ve all heard. But how whimsical can it be? Charu Sharma will be wondering about the same for a long, long time.

The famous commentator, compere, and quiz master was having a peaceful lunch in Bangalore with his family when he received a strange call on Saturday. The call must have been brief, crisp, and precise to the point that his services were required at the IPL 2022 Mega Auction.

It was an unfortunate event at the ITC Gardenia Hotel, where the Mega Auction was taking place, which forced Sharma to leave his lunch and rush to the spot.

Hugh Edmeades, the British auctioneer, had a nasty fall during the event. He was rushed for a medical emergency and deemed unfit to continue hosting the event.

After which, the current IPL chairman Brijesh Patel made a phone call to procure the services of his friend Charu Sharma.

In a conversation later on in the day, Sharma revealed the details of the phone call. “I don’t live too far from the hotel,” Sharma told Sportstar in a conversation, “Brijesh called me and said, ‘just put on some clothes and run.’ I was there in just 15-20 minutes. They briefed me for a bit, and then we were on.”

Charu Sharma has been a renowned name in the game of cricket. He was a famous commentator but has been out of business recently. Currently, he said that he still does “a fair amount of cricket and other leagues.”

The 62-year-old did a commendably good job under such short notice.

Hugh Edmeades, on the other hand, is now stable. He shared a message thanking everyone for their wishes and assured everyone about his well-being. However, he will not be returning to the auction on the second day.
