Carlos Alcaraz breaks several records in his 3-1 win over Casper Ruud in US Open final

Carols Alcaraz creates history at the Arthur Ashe stadium as he defeats Norway’s Casper Ruud to win his maiden Grand Slam title in US Open 2022.

It was one of the most anticipated games in the tennis circuit as the title of last grand slam champion of the year was up for grab. What made it more interesting was the fact that there was going to be a new champion to the tournament.

On one eld was a seasoned Carper Ruud of Norway, and on the other was a lesser-known name Carlos Alcaraz.

The 19-year-old had no vote of confidence heading into the game. And he proved everyone wrong with his game. And clinched the US Open title by beating Ruud 3-1 on the day.

Casper Ruud started off in style. He won the second set in a dominating fashion to level the encounter. But as the game went on he slowly lost his grip and Alcaraz got his firmer in the game.

The third set went to a tie breaker which Alcaraz secured with a 7-1 margin. He sealed the victory in the final set 6-3 victory.

With this victory he not just became the youngest world number 1 player on the ATP ranking but broke several other records as well.

Alcaraz is the third player in Open Era to win the US Open in his first or second main draw appearance in the tournament after Arthur Ashe in 1968 and Rod Laver in 1969.

Alcaraz becomes the second youngest US Open title holder after the legendary Pete Sampras, who at 19 years and 15 days, had claimed the major in New York back on 1990.

Alcaraz is the first player to win the US Open title after having saved match point since Stan Wawrinka in 2016.

Alcaraz is now the youngest ever player to move to the top spot in ATP rankings, beating the previous record of 20 years and 266 days held by Australia’s Leyton Hewitt. 

The total time Alcaraz spent on court during the tournament (23 hours 39 minutes) which is the most ever played by a competitor in a Grand Slam tournament, surpassing Kevin Anderson at 2018 Wimbledon.
