Transfer deadline day: Barcelona terminates Martin Braithwaite’s contract, he joins rivals Espanyol; know contract details

Braithwaite to Espanyol

It was indeed a sensational and long transfer window from Barcelona as they made 8 new signings and sold 15 of their players.

There were even some outgoings and incomings on the deadline day at the club and one of them was Martin Braithwaite. He is a player who was signed on an emergency transfer deal back in February of 2020 on which the previous board of Barca paid out 18 Million Euros to sign the striker.

They also gave him a massive contract which would run until 2024. That deal was indeed a disaster cause even since he was signed, Barca have been trying to offload the Danish International.

But the player has been refusing to every club’s offer cause he wants to be on his current contract so that he gets that astronomical amount of wages at the La Liga side and he accepted this even if it meant not playing at all.

Hence, Laporta and his board had taken the decision to terminate his deal and throughout the summer they were finding a way to complete this termination.

And finally, on the very last day of the transfer window, Barca reached a mutual termination agreement with Braithwaite and despite his agents demanding all summer 5 Million Euros to terminate his deal, it is being reported that the Catalan giants have only paid 150,000 Euros.

Since the termination has been completed, Braithwaite has joined Barcelona’s city rivals Espanyol and he is going to be signing a 3-year deal with them.

The main reason he joined them was because he wanted to continue living in Barcelona. It would also be interesting to see him returning with Espanyol at the Camp Nou when the big derby game comes around.

All in all, the striker has made the right decision for him cause at his new club, he’ll surely get the game time and this would be highly beneficial for him cause the World Cup is just around the corner and in order to get into Denmark’s squad he needs to be in top form.
