Tagenarine Chanderpaul, born on May 31, 1996, is a Guyanese cricketer who has carved his path in the cricketing world, following in the footsteps of his legendary father, Shivnarine Chanderpaul. Tagenarine is a left-hand opening batsman known for his solid technique and resilience at the crease. His journey from youth cricket to the international arena is a testament to his talent and dedication to the sport.

Domestic Career

Hailing from Guyana, Tagenarine’s cricketing journey began at a young age. He showcased his talent as a prolific run-scorer for Guyana at the youth level, earning a spot in the Windies squad for the 2014 Under-19s World Cup held in the UAE. In February 2013, at the age of just 16, Tagenarine made his first-class debut for Guyana against Leeward Islands in the regional four-day competition. Following in his father’s footsteps, who also made his debut for Guyana as a teenager, Tagenarine displayed promise and potential from an early age.

Tagenarine’s domestic career saw moments of brilliance, including his maiden first-class century against Barbados in January 2018, where he scored an unbeaten 101 runs. His consistent performances earned him recognition, and he was named in Guyana’s squad for various domestic tournaments, including the Regional Super50 tournament in 2019–20.

In the 2021-22 West Indies four-day championship, Chanderpaul’s outstanding form was evident as he emerged as the second-highest run-scorer, accumulating 439 runs in eight innings at an impressive average of 73.16.

International Career

His consistent performances, including two centuries, played a pivotal role in Guyana’s success. In 2023, Chanderpaul was selected for the West Indies A team in first-class matches against Bangladesh. He made an immediate impact, scoring an unbeaten century in the second Four-Day Game. His consistent displays earned him a call-up to the West Indies senior team for their tour of Australia in 2022.

Making his Test debut in Perth, Tagenarine showcased his potential with a maiden Test half-century in the first innings. He followed it up with crucial contributions in the subsequent matches, including a memorable double-century against Zimbabwe in February 2023, where he formed a record-breaking partnership with West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite. Tagenarine’s journey in international cricket continued as he earned selection in the West Indies squad for the test match series against Australia in December 2023.
