Shafali Verma, the standout batter for India’s women’s cricket side, has been selected captain of the ICC Under-19 Women’s World Cup. “The All-India Women’s Selection Committee has selected the India U19 Women’s squad for the next bilateral away T20 series against South Africa U19 and the ICC U19 Women’s World Cup,” said the BCCI in a release.

The inaugural ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup, involving 16 countries, will be held in South Africa from January 14 to 29, 2023. India is in Group D with South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, and Scotland. The top three teams from each group advance to the Super Six stage, in which teams are divided into two groups of six.

The top two teams from each group will then advance to the semi-finals, which will be held on January 27 at Potchefstroom’s JB Marks Oval. On January 29, the final will be held at the same location.
