Manchester United has registered its first victory of the 2022/23 season. And it came against the mighty Liverpool team at Old Trafford yesterday.

Jordan Sancho and Marcus Rashford came to their team’s rescue when it was required the most. Both of them scored one goal each to help their team register a 2-1 victory against Liverpool.

It was one of the most enticing encounters earlier on in the season as two of the most successful teams in the premier league took the ground against one another.

What hyped the match was that both Manchester United and Liverpool had the worst start to their Premier League season since the 1980/81 season.

That was the last time the teams failed to register a win in their opening two fixtures. Hence, here they were in Manchester, trying to outdo one another.

On the one hand, Liverpool came into the game on the back of two draws against Fulham and Crystal Palace. But Manchester United had no points to their name. They had suffered two thumping losses against Brighton and Brentford.

As a result, they were languishing at the bottom of the table with no points to their name. And were considered the underdog against Liverpool in their third encounter.

Erik Ten Hag’s gamble pays off

But that is when they decided to turn the tables. Erik Ten Hag changed his strategies around tremendously. And took some bold decisions to drop Harry Maguire and Cristiano Ronaldo. He gave Rashford a start, and the results were there to show.

Jadon Sancho scored his just fourth goal in the Manchester Colors. But what a goal it was in the 15th minute of the game. The goal’s magnitude was significant not only with context to the game but the entire season itself.

This goal put Manchester United on the front foot.

Despite looking shaky at the back, United did not allow any Liverpool player to score past them in the first half. Salah, Jota, and Firminho came close, but it was not enough.

In the second half, Rashford doubled the lead for United with a great run and a superb finish that put Manchester United in the driving seat.

Although Salah put one back for Liverpool in the 81st minute, his side couldn’t make a comeback. And ended up second best on the day.

This victory has taken Manchester United off their trenches. They now sit 14th on the table with 3 points to their name. On the other hand, Liverpool is suffocating in the 16 positions with just 2 points from 3 games.
