Lionel Messi is getting closer and closer to becoming a free agent in the summer as his contract with PSG expires at the end of the season.
Talks over a new deal for the Argentina captain have been taking place for a while now, with Fabrizio Romano even suggesting that there had been a verbal pact over an extension back in December itself.
However, doubts have begun with fans on whether Messi will remain in France beyond the ongoing season.
Reports this past weekend suggested that the record 7-time Ballon d’Or winner is considering returning to Barcelona as a priority this summer.
Even Fc Barcelona president never rejected the idea of bringing Messi back to the club after the problems over the club are over.
PSG Showing Hesitation After Claiming To Be Confident About The Deal
Now, an update in which L’Equipe is claiming that PSG themselves are ‘no longer sure’ about whether they want to renew Messi’s contract or not.
This comes after the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner was targeted by the club’s supporters as they whistled and jeered at him during PSG’s defeat to Rennes in Ligue 1 over the weekend.
Also, following the full-time whistle, the former Barcelona captain also showed discontent and headed straight for the tunnel, while his teammates who went to clap and apologise to the fans.
Hence, L’Equipe is claiming that PSG are no longer sure about whether they should hand Messi a new contract as it is becoming clear that some sections of the club’s supporters do not wish for it to happen.
PSG Are Looking for A Rebuild
The Ligue 1 champions are now thinking about their next steps as they look to build for the next phase of the project after yet another disappointing campaign in Europe which ended with a Round of 16 exit in the UEFA Champions League again. PSG might look towards offloading some of their superstar signings like Neymar and Messi to get rid off the extra eyes and pressure they bring to the dressing room.
Barcelona, for their part, are understood to be keen on re-signing their club legend should he decide to not continue in Paris. However, Financial Fair Play will dictate whether they can afford to bring him back to the club for one last dance.
