Manchester City will sign Mateo Kovacic from Chelsea

Treble winners Manchester City will sign Mateo Kovacic from Chelsea for £30 million. The midfielder will complete his medical this week at the Etihad Stadium.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Man City have agreed to pay Chelsea £25 million for the Croatian with £5 million in add-ons. The £5 million in add-ons will activate only when Man City win titles and not on players’ performances.

The Premier League champions were linked with Kovacic for quite some time now. And he was also ready to join Man City.

Mateo Kovacic leave Chelsea after four years

The Croatian joined Chelsea from Real Madrid in 2019 and won four trophies with the Blues, including the Champions League and Europa League.

His departure means that Chelsea are losing an integral member of their squad, as he played a big part last season, with 37 appearances in all competitions.

However, Chelsea are offloading players, as they want to trim their squad ahead of the new season. Last season they finished 12th, and they spent a lot of money in the January transfer window. Moreover, to balance the books they need to sell players this summer.

According to reports, Pep Guardiola wanted the player this season. Moreover, Kovacic may have also forced Chelsea’s hand, as he was believed to be keen to link up with Pep.

The Croatian international recorded six goals and 15 assists across 221 appearances for Chelsea in his four-year span. However, last season was not that good for him and Chelsea. They slumped to their worst-ever Premier League finish ever.

Kovacic will be one of several Chelsea players leaving London this summer, with Kante already joining Saudi side Al-Ittihad this week.

Hakim Ziyech and Edouard Mendy, are also linked with a move to Saudi Arabian clubs.
