Madhya Pradesh created history by getting their hands on the first-ever Ranji Trophy. They defeated the 41-time champion Mumbai to achieve this feat.

It was never easy coming into the final. Let alone facing a top champion team like Mumbai. But Madhya Pradesh was not intimidated by the challenge and won the game comprehensively.

The game didn’t certainly start well for them. Mumbai’s young captain Prithvi Shaw along with his opening partner Jaiswal gave his team a solid start.

MP win the Ranji Trophy 2021/22

MP’s bowlers strike back on the second day to reduce Mumbai’s march to just 374. A late burst by Sarfaraz Khan’s knock of 134 helped Mumbai onto the score.

The MP batters went on to a flier. Three of their batters scored centuries to post a mammoth total of 536. This helped them gain a lead of 162 runs. Yash Dubey was the pick of batter for MP; he scored a fabulous knock of 133.

On the final day, Mumbai faltered in posting any problems to MP and was dismissed for a meager score of 269. This left MP with a target of 108 to be chased down in almost two sessions.

Their batters did it with relative ease. Although Mumbai bowlers picked four wickets, they never really looked in control.

As a result, Madhya Pradesh chased down the total in just 29.5 overs.

With this, they announced their dominance in the Indian domestic circuit. Having no sort of experience in their squad, they were written off by everyone. But they still made a fairytale-like run throughout the tournament to win the trophy.

Shubham Sharma of Madhya Pradesh was adjourned as the man of the match for his century and another hefty contribution in the second inning.

Sarfaraz Khan, who scored 982 runs (most in the tournament), was named as player of the series.
