LSG appoints Justin Langer as Head Coach after Andy Flower’s departure

Lucknow Super Giants has appointed former Australian head coach Justin Langer as the head coach of the team for the 2024 IPL season. The announcement came last night after several media outlets reported that the franchise was in talks with the former Australian opener after the team’s another playoff exit in IPL 2023. It was the second time in as many seasons that LSG finished in the fourth spot.

The owners of the team mighty have felt the need for a change in personnel to go a step further in the league and Justin Langer has been entrusted with the job of taking the team forward as a coach. One of the things that might have worked in favor of Justin’s appointment as the head coach of the team is his experience as the coach of the Australian team. As it was under his coaching that Australia won the T20 world cup for the first time in 2021 in UAE.

Langer’s Legacy

Although Langer’s stint with Australia as the head coach was a successful one but his exit was not a pleasant one and that too after winning the Ashes on home soil. He took over as the head coach after the sandpaper gate in 2018 which saw three Australian cricketers being banned by their own board. Australian Cricket was in its darkest phase and Langer came as a light at the end of the tunnel and revived the team under his coaching.

Australia had a tremendous run under Langer which started with a come-from-behind series win against India in India in 2019 which was followed by a clean sweep against Pakistan a semifinal exit in the world cup and a drawn Ashes series in England which helped the team retain the Ashes.

Langer has experience of coaching in T20 cricket. The former Australian batter was the coach of Perth Scorchers when they won three BBL titles.

What They Said

Reacting to the appointment Langer said, “Lucknow Super Giants are on the journey of building a great story in the IPL.” “We all have a role to play in that journey and I am excited to be a part of the team moving forward.”

Sanjiv Goenka, owner of the Super Giants franchise said, “I have enjoyed my interactions with Justin Langer. He seems to bring in a huge amount of aggression and a lot of clarity.
