Lanka Premier League: Chamika Karunaratne’s brave catching effort result in broken teeths

Despite being in excruciating discomfort, the Sri Lanka international hung onto the catch before giving it to a teammate. He was sent to the hospital right away.

Chamika Karunaratne of Sri Lanka lost many front teeth while grabbing a catch in the ongoing Lanka Premier League in Hambantota. Karunaratne suffered serious injuries as the ball struck him in the face while attempting to take the catch in LPL 2022 on Wednesday. The 26-year-old was carried off the field and rushed to the hospital for surgery soon after sustaining the horrific injuries. Karunaratne is likely to return to the field in the tournament’s later stages.

The incident occurred during the ongoing Lanka Premier League match between Galle Gladiators and Kandy Falcons. Nuwanidu Fernando was at the crease, attempting to hit a wide-length ball off Carlos Brathwaite’s bowling over the cover.

Fernando, on the other hand, mistimed his shot and sent the ball straight up in the air. Karunaratne, a Kandy Falcons player, made the catch while running behind from point in the fourth over of the first innings.

The ball struck Karunaratne in the face, causing him to bleed. Despite being in excruciating discomfort, the Sri Lanka international hung onto the catch before giving it to a teammate. The team doctor promptly pulled him off the field and transported him to the hospital for surgery. Karunaratne is thought to have lost many front teeth as the ball hit directly on his face. A video of the incident has gone viral on social media.

Galle Gladiators won the toss and chose to bat first at Hambantota’s Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium. Batting first, the Gladiators scored 121/8 in 20 overs, thanks to Movin Subasingha’s 40-run performance and Imad Wasim’s 34 runs. Carlos Brathwaite was the bowler of choice for Kandy Falcons, taking four wickets in the game.

The Falcons then chased down the target in 15 overs, owing to some crucial knocks from Pathum Nissanka, Andre Fletcher, and Kamindu Mendis, who led his team with 44 runs off 34 balls. With 30 balls remaining, the Falcons triumphed by 5 wickets.
