Kaoru Mitoma signs new contract with Brighton until 2027

Kaoru Mitoma signs new four-year contract with Brighton & Hove Albion that will keep him at the club until June 2027.

The Seagulls knew that Manchester City and other big European clubs were lining up a move for him. Moreover, his previous deal was expiring in 2025. Mitoma could’ve left the club for a bargain price next summer if he was unable to extend his contract.

The 26-year-old winger is now one of Brighton & Hove Albion’s highest earner.

Brighton signed Mitoma from Japanese club Kawasaki Frontale for just £2.5 million in 2021. Nevertheless, he spent the 2021/22 season on loan at Union Saint-Gilloise.

The Japanese international made his name last season after registering 10 goals and eight assists in all competitions. He has now become one of the most important player for Roberto De Zerbi’s side.

Kaoru Mitoma also starred for Japan in the Qatar World Cup last year, and many clubs started to notice how good he was.

This season, Mitoma has maintained his impressive form, registering three goals and three assists in eight Premier League appearances.

Furthermore, he scored one of the best goals so far this season against Wolves on matchday two. Mitoma collected the ball from Estupinan from the left flank, breezed past Semedo, Dawson and Kilman, and calmly slotted it home past Jose Sa.

Last month, Pep Guardiola was asked which Asian player he currently admires most. Guardiola then said: “Mitoma has been incredible. He is in the right place with the right manager. His last season was incredible.”

De Zerbi will hope that Mitoma continues to perform for his side like he did last season. Brighton now face Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium this weekend.
