Joao Cancelo will join Barcelona from Manchester City on loan

Manchester City full-back Joao Cancelo will join Barcelona on a season-long loan, including a buy option of €25 million in 2024. Cancelo was all set and ready to travel to Barcelona. But, according to reports, his flight has been cancelled.

Moreover, this will be the Portuguese’ second loan spell in the last seven months, as he joined Bayern in the January transfer window.

The 29-year-old’s departure came as a shock given what a hugely important figure he had been for City during their 2021/22 title triumph. Moreover, Pep Guardiola also had a spat with him, and that’s why he left Man City to join Bayern.

Furthermore, the Bavarian’s coach Thomas Tuchel reportedly said that Cancelo complaints a lot and does not have a good attitude. So, this could prove to be a big problem for Xavi, as he would not want him to disrupt his dressing room.

Joao Cancelo will join Barcelona, but can he solve their right-back issues?

Ever since Dani Alves left the club in 2016, Barca has been unable to find a quality right-back to replace him. Furthermore, Barcelona resigned the Brazilian for six months, and he had good performances as well.

However, he was not getting any younger. The club have been very weak in the full-back positions in the past years, and that have hampered their performances in the Champions League.

Last season, La Masia youngster Alex Balde shocked everyone and made the left-back position his own. Furthermore, he also benched experienced player like Jordi Alba.

The La Liga champions now have Joao Cancelo as their new right-back, plus they got a good deal considering the quality he posses. The Portuguese have good attacking output and can join the midfield if needed.

Moreover, he will make overlapping runs from the right side to connect well with wingers like Raphina or Lamine Yamal.

Cancelo will look to make his debut for Barcelona over the weekend against Osasuna on Sunday.
