France 4-1 Australia; Giroud Scores Brace, Equals Thierry Henry’s Internal Goal tally

No one missed Karim Benzema, after the defending champions, France, rightly begins their FIFA World Cup 2022 run with a bang after having a field day of 4-1 against Australia.

The French team had their way quickly, sliding through and piercing the Australian defence repeatedly in the Al Janoub Stadium, and currently stands tall at the top of Group D.

Australia had taken a very early lead in the match, with Craig Goodwin scoring in the 9th minute. But the celebrations of the Australians lasted only a short time because the first half was very long. Soon came the equalizer from Adrien Rabiot for the French team in the 27th minute.

A few minutes later, Oliver Giroud, who was fully fired up and netted his opening goal for World Cup 2022 and gave France their lead in the 32nd minute.

Giroud, Mbappe joined the party in Qatar

You are entirely wrong if you thought this was the tale’s end with 3 goals combined in the first half. The second half began with the wonder-kid of 2018, Kylian Mbappe, finally scoring his first goal of the 2022 World Cup after trying to find an opening in the Australian defence for quite a while, in the 68th minute and forwarding the lead to 3-1.

Oliver Giroud was unstoppable on the field when he found none other than Mbappe’s assist, converted it into a fine goal, and completed his brace in the 71st minute of the match. With this goal scored, Giroud has now equalized Thiery Henry to become France’s joint-highest goalscorer in history.

History was made, and the defending champions are now at the top of Group D; while Australia has fallen to its doom at the bottom, their only chance remains if they successfully beat Tunisia on Saturday. The French will try to maintain their lead and stay on top with their upcoming match against Denmark on the same Saturday.
