BBL 12: Tom Rogers picks fifer to helps Renegades beat Stars after runout debacle in first inning

Melbourne Renegades brushed aside Melbourne Stars in the derby encounter at the MCG on Tuesday (January 3) to pick up a much-needed win. Both the sides went into this game searching for a win after making an erratic start to the campaign. In the end, it was Tom Rogers’ five-wicket haul that made the difference as Renegades prevailed by 33 runs.

Renegades brushed Stars aside in an impossible looking feat

Chasing 142, Stars received a jolt very early. Joe Clarke was castled by Tom Rogers second ball and then Beau Webster and Thomas Rogers were dismissed by the same bowler in the third over. Will Sutherland joined the party soon as the top four were all dismissed for single-digit scores.

Stars pretty much needed a miracle from 18/4 to get anywhere closer to the target and even though Hilton Cartwright and Nick Larkin steadied the innings for a while, they couldn’t sustain for a long period. Rogers came back to trigger another collapse as four more batters failed to touch double digits. Larkin was the only one to offer some fight as he remained unbeaten on 48 but Rogers completed his five-wicket haul to bowl his side to a comfortable victory eventually.

Tom Rogers gets to have the final laugh

Rogers was clearly pumped-up when he opened the bowling. With his first legal delivery, Rogers bowled in-form Joe Clarke with a cracker then dismissed Beau Webster caught and bowled.
Conjuring menacing movement, he was almost unplayable and claimed his third wicket by bowling his namesake Tom Rogers to leave Stars reeling at 12 for 3 in the third over.

He returned in the 11th over to snare Hilton Cartwright, who had started a rescue job alongside Nick Larkin, and then removed Luke Wood to finish with 5 for 16 in the best figures in Renegades’ history.

It is note worthy that the ‘Melbourne derby’ descended into controversy when Zampa tried to run out non-striker Rogers in the last over of Renegades’ innings. But it was given not out and Rogers then ripped through Stars’ batting order as Renegades snapped a four-game losing streak. Hence, it was Tom Rogers who gets to have the final laugh.
