BBL 12: Here’s why Adam Zampa’s run out attempt at non-striker’s end was ruled not out by Umpire

Adam Zampa’s Mankad Attempt: Melbourne Star’s skipper, Zampa has caused a stir at the MCG during the BBL’s Melbourne derby. His runout attempt at the bowler’s end before delivering the ball – universally known as a Mankad has left the cricket fraternity divided well again.

The Melbourne Stars skipper was on fire on Tuesday night. With his exceptional bowling and captaincy, he had his crosstown rivals the Melbourne Renegades on the ropes during the last over of the first innings. Zampa had a miserly 1-16 from 3.4 overs, leading his side to an impressive bowling performance. As they managed to restrict the Renegades to 7-139 with two balls left in the innings.

Running in to bowl the penultimate ball of the innings, Zampa held onto the ball as non-striker Tom Rogers left his crease in anticipation of stealing a run in the dying stages. Zampa then turned around and took the bails off at the non-striker’s end, with Rogers well out of his ground.

Why Zampa’s attempt to run out was given not out by Umpire?

However, Zampa was immediately booed by the crowd. Hence, again the ‘fair game merchants’, who clearly weren’t impressed with the Mankad attempt. Although, it is clearly within the laws of the game, yet is considered by many as outside the spirit of it.

Further, the decision was sent upstairs to third umpire, Shawn Craig. Who wanted to check if Zampa’s bowling arm had gone past the vertical axis, which would render the Mankad attempt failed.

Replays showed Zampa’s arm had clearly gone past the vertical axis before turning around and taking the bails off, so the runout attempt was disallowed.
