Recent football updates suggest that new Barcelona Sporting Director Deco has confirmed that he has been in contact with Frenkie de Jong’s agent as the club wants to renew his contract.
De Jong has been one of the best midfielders in the world in recent years and a key piece in Xavi’s midfield as well. The Dutchman suffered an injury in September and hopes to get back on the field in November.
The 26-year-old, however has a broken relationship with Barcelona board after they tried to sell him to Manchester United last summer. It is reported that ex-Sporting Director Mateu Alemany was not to the liking of de Jong’s agency.
One of the biggest tasks of Deco is to repair those broken relations with De Jong’s agents and eventually tie him down to a new contract.
Barcelona ready to offer Frenkie de Jong a new contract
De Jong has a contract until 2026, and the club wants to renew his contract for a long time and get him to take a pay cut in the process. However, Deco has revealed that he hasn’t opened negotiations.
“I’ve texted Frenkie de Jong’s agents to introduce myself. We didn’t touch on new deal yet, but we want him to stay at Barça for many years, it’s clear, he told MD.
“It’s the same for Frenkie, Pedri, Gavi, Araujo, Gundogan… that’s the plan.
“I see Frenkie de Jong enjoying his life at Barça”. He’s happy here, he’s playing top-level football, and he feels very good at the end, it’s always the player deciding. He’s under contract until 2026, and we want him to stay for a long time.”
Deco didn’t shed light on the deteriorated relations in the past but said that he was confident that De Jong will sign a new long-term deal.
The Dutchman has never been shy about the fact his dream was to play for FC Barcelona. It would be a surprise if he leaves the club in the future with his first child to be delivered shortly.
Nevertheless, Barcelona will have to be careful with the negotiations considering how important De Jong is to the club.
