Xavi Denies Busquets’ Plea to Leave Barcelona in January

The cycle of time is not favorable for the captains of FC Barcelona. The financial burden on the club has been expanding for quite some time now, resulting in the serial firing of the captains from the club because of their fat pay packages.

This makes us wonder if the glorious Spanish giants, ruling La Liga alongside other clubs like Real Madrid, are going down the ditch despite having a legendary history.

Gerard Pique, the Spanish star defender and captain of Barcelona, had been so exhausted from the pressure that his position brought that he announced his retirement from professional football.

This action can be motivated by the fact that Pique took a voluntary pay cut last year in the hopes of helping the struggling club with its financial worries. The 30-year-old Sergio Roberto wasn’t spared as well, while he had to sign a depressingly low renewal for this season with Barca.

This messy situation escalated further after the newly elected president Joan Laporta suggested at the Members’ Assembly that the club’s captains were too enthusiastic about their lower salaries. However, he also emphasized that it was within their rights. From that moment on, all hell broke loose, with multiple frowns from the stands; Sergio Busquets was not left uninjured from all this commotion either. However, the captain’s situation is quite different because his contract doesn’t expire before next June, and more importantly, he is a regular starter under Xavi’s managership.

Busquets wanted to leave in January

But despite that, a couple of match errors and mistakes proved enough for the Spanish footballer to notice some hisses from the sidelines. This particular reaction had Busquets reconsidering his presence in the club and wanting to leave the club in January.

Bur manager Xavi had some other plans for the captain in mind. For the manager, the captain’s departure from the club had zero chance of happening; owing to Busquets’ steadfast commitment to the club, Xavi made sure that Busquets’ presence in the team was beyond any doubt.

Busquets is essential for the coach because of his knowledgeable stance regarding the defensive midfield position. Hence, the manager did not even let the possibility of him leaving the club in January spark. The summer is a completely different matter altogether. Barca does not seem enthusiastic about letting him continue even after his contract expires in June. This is due to the fact, as mentioned earlier that at the moment, they cannot afford to pay him whatever amount he currently persists on, or even anything close to it.
