The game of women cricket has just got more exciting with these new rules being introduced in the WPL 2023. These New rules of WPL 2023 are supposed to give the players more control over the decision making. Hence, the DRS is something that will be seen being taken more often.

According to the new rules of WPL 2023, a team will be allowed to review any decision that is taken by the on-field umpire.

Yes you have read that right, the players will now have the freedom to even review wide and no ball decisions made by the onfield umpires.

Players can review wide and no ball decisions as per New Rules of WPL 2023

Earlier in the game of cricket DRS or Direct Review System was introduced to overturn an umpires decision if he gives out wrongly. According to this rule, a batter or bowling team could challenge an umpire’s decision of out or not out.

In such a scenario, the umpire was then forced to refer the decision to TV Umpire. Who would then make use of the right technology like: Spin Vision, Ball Tracking, RTS or Real Time Snickometer to decide whether a batter is out or not.

Now the BCCI has decided to give the players even more freedom. So, along with reviewing the dismissal decisions the players can also review other decisions like no ball and wide balls as a part of new rules of WPL 2023.

Use of technology to review no-ball & Wide ball

The Clause 3.1.1 says “A player may request a review of any decision taken by the on-field umpires concerning whether or not a batsman is dismissed, with the exception of ‘Timed Out’ (Player Review).”

So, if a batter believes that the ball has been illegal, and the umpire has made a blunder, they can review that decision to get it checked by the TV umpire.

It can be done by both the fielding and batting side. Hence, if the bowling team believes that a decision was made wrongly by the umpire, they too can make use of the review system to get it checked and if possible overturned.

It will be interesting to see how the players will make the most of the WPL 2023 new rules.

There have already been two instances of fielding team and batters asking for review of wide and no balls simultaneously in the first two game of the WPL 2023.

The new rules of WPL 2023 are truly revolutionary. It will be interesting to see how the women cricketers will be able to leverage these techniques in the coming WPL 2023 and make the most of them.
