Gujarat were one Ashleigh Gardner innings away

An all-round performance from Ashleigh Gardner has helped Gujarat Giants get an important 11-run win over the Delhi Capitals on Thursday.

After being put into bat first, Gujarat Giants folded for a below-par score of 148, but managed to defend the total by dismissing Capitals for 136 in 18.4 overs. Gardner starred with the bat first, smashing a 33-ball 51, scoring her first fifty of the tournament.

Later, she took 2 wickets while conceding just 19 runs in 3.4 overs to bring her team home. Laura Wolvaardt, who was playing only in her second WPL match, too, scored a half-century, putting an 81-run partnership with Gardner.

Meg Lanning explains the reason behind their loss

Meg Lanning, DC Captain speaking after her team’s loss mentioned, “We felt that if we bat out the overs, we could actually get over the line. Gujarat team bowled very well. We didn’t play to our potential tonight. Our bowlers did an excellent job and I think they were 20-25 short.”

Adding to her statement the losing captain said, “We didn’t take that many wickets but we contained them quite well. With wickets in the back end, obviously they would score a bit. It is a good learning opportunity for us. My shot playing across the line was poor and two key run-outs. We lost momentum as we lost a few wickets but credit to Gujarat.”
