Watch: Rohit Sharma withdraws run-out appeal by Shami against Shanaka at non-striker’s end; reveals reason behind it

Rohit Sharma wins over the internet in the game between India and Sri Lanka by withdrawing a run out appeal against Dasun Shanaka in the final over.

The incident took place in the 50th over of the game when Shami was running in to bowl the fourth delivery of his final over. Just as he was about to reach the crease he slowed down when he noticed Shanaka out of the crease, and broke the stumps instead.

Shami appealed to the umpire for a run out and unsure of how far down the pitch Shanaka was, the main umpire signaled to the third umpire to have a look.

In the mean time it was visible that Shami and Rohit Sharma had a small discussion. Following this discussion Shami walked up to Umpire and withdrew his appeal.

Shanaka, who was batting at 98, survived the disastrous run out at nonstriker’s end. And went on to score a fabulous century, the second of his career.

Later in the post-match interview Rohit Sharma explained what transpired on the field. “I had no idea Shami had done that,” Rohit told Star Sports after the game. “When he went up in an appeal… Again, he [Shanaka] is batting on 98. The way he batted was brilliant. We got to give it to him. We cannot get him out like that. We wanted to get him out the way we thought we would get him out. But that was not something that we thought of. But again, hats off to him, he played really well.”

India didn’t need the wicket anyway. They had won the game a long while ago.

Sri Lanka already required 83 runs off the last 3 balls. Hence, it was a sensible call from Rohit Sharma to withdraw the appeal.

Dasun Shanaka also recognized that and immediately went on to shake hand with Sharma. However, this incident was soon followed by Virat Kohli shouting “Shanaka, now stay in your crease.”

In the end it was a huge win for India who defeated Sri Lanka by a margin of 67 runs. Virat Kohli was adjudged as the man of the match for his 87 ball 113.
