Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia Respond to Asian Games Trials Controversy

In the world of Indian wrestling, Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia have been under scrutiny recently for their acceptance of exemption from the Asian Games trials. While facing backlash from the wrestling fraternity, the two prominent wrestlers took to social media to respond to the allegations and express their delight at the younger generation’s growing courage to stand up for their rights.

Delighting in the Younger Generation’s Fight

Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia acknowledged the passion of young wrestlers who fought for their rights and sought trials for the upcoming Asian Games. They expressed satisfaction at witnessing the younger generation’s courage and determination to challenge established norms in the sport of wrestling.

In their social media responses, Vinesh and Bajrang clarified that they were not opposed to the trials. While understanding the perspective of junior wrestler Antim Panghal, they asserted that they, too, were fighting for their rights within the system. Vinesh pointed out that she and Bajrang had faced challenges and made sacrifices during their careers, which was not acknowledged during their peak in the sport.

Bajrang Punia came to Vinesh’s defense, reiterating her impressive track record in wrestling. He emphasized that she had not suffered any losses and was a leading figure in the wrestling world. He countered Antim’s claims of being the first Indian to win the U-20 championship by showcasing Vinesh’s accomplishments as a two-time World Championship medalist.

Determination to Continue Wrestling

Despite the criticism, Vinesh Phogat reaffirmed her dedication to wrestling, particularly her dream of winning at the Olympics. With 20 years in the sport, she stated that she would not give up and is committed to achieving success. Bajrang echoed her sentiments, expressing his unwavering resolve to continue in the sport he loves.

Both Vinesh and Bajrang stated that they would not indulge in issuing constant clarifications and instead called for an open dialogue to address the matter. They challenged the wrestling fraternity to sit together and discuss the issue rationally, promising to quit wrestling if proven wrong.

During their social media response, Vinesh and Bajrang also expressed disappointment with London Olympic medalist Yogeshwar Dutt for supporting Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the outgoing Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief, whom they accused of sexually exploiting women wrestlers.
