USWNT Megan Rapinoe Makes Tearful Remarks as USA Knocked Out from World Cup

With the knocking out the United States from the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, the dreams and aspirations for one of their most prolific players, Megan Rapinoe, a Ballon d’Or winner, also was kicked out of the tournament by the Swedish national team.

And it clearly was not the ending that Mega Rapinoe or any of her teammates had in mind. In the dismay and distastefulness of the defeat, she went as far as to term it as a sick joke and a dark comedy.

As Rapinoe realized that the time of her dance for the USWNT has come to an end, the two-time World Cup winner for the US appeared in tears as it dawned that this was the last time, she would be representing her nation at the highest level.

Rapinoe made her 202nd appearances for the USWNT as the defending champions. She is considered objectively to be one of the most successful players of the generation and had already made an official announcement that she would retire at the end of this season.

Rapinoe was rightfully overwhelmed by her emotions, as many of her male counterparts like Neymar and Ronaldo had done the same during the Men’s 2022 World Cup when they were knocked out. She was amongst the three players who had failed to score from the penalty spot, making them directly the reason for their failure.

The 38-year-old Olympic gold medalist attempted to hide her face from the spotlight by lifting her shirt up and later in a statement said that it was like a sick joke and that for her personally, this was like a dark comedy, especially since she also missed a penalty.

Megan Rapinoe was not the starter in any of the matches for the USWNT at this 2023 World Cup. She made about three substitute appearances and spent only a good 77 minutes of playtime in the field in the colours of stars and stripes.

In a way of expressing her emotions and reflecting on her star-studded, well-decorated legacy, she said to the media that she had always tried playing the game in a “right way” and has tried to go about things in the conventional right way.

Rapinoe continued that she has always tried to use any platform that they had and since this platform particularly was built long before she ever got there, this was also the perfect place to grow the sport, to make the world a better place and to use their voices to advocate for much more.

Rapinoe also sparked some positive remarks by saying that she knew that she will be walking away from the sport after achieving everything that it has to offer and that she possibly could ever get her hands on, and while that, having enjoyed every moment of it, celebrated, fought and having put everything she had out there.
