Sweden 5-0  Italy; Swedish Score Three Goals in 7 Minutes For Knockout Stage Spot

Sweden cruised past Italy in the latest saga of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup clash of the Group G giants in a gigantic 5-0 victory that took the Wellington Regional Stadium by storm this Saturday.

Sweden seal spot in Round of 16 with 5-0 win over Italy

The lightning fast three-goal stunner by the Swedish national team was the biggest highlight of the match that sealed the spot for Sweden in the knockout stages of the tournament.

Amanda Ilestedt netted the first goal of her brace at the 39th minute of the game through a brilliantly taken corner, which became the opening goal of the match. Exactly five minutes later at the 44th minute, Fridolina Rolfo increased the lead for Sweden with another stunner.

However, in an unusual unfolding, Sweden scored another in just a span of one minute in the 45+1 minute of the match when Stina Blackstenius successfully shot the ball past the goalkeeper to end the match then and there before the half-time, giving her team a three-goal lead.

The three-goal difference didn’t make the Swedish lax in any way and they continued to utterly demolish the Italian defence, while the Italians stood stunned, unable to do anything. Ilestedt found another opening right after the half time in the 50th minute of the game and completed her brace.

Later, even the Swedish substitute Rebecka Blomqvist found the back of the Italian during the extra stoppage time in the 90+5 minute of the match, making the final score a depressing 5-0, completely shattering the hopes and dreams of the Italian national team.

Despite the Italians having dominated the ball possession during the early minutes of the match, they were thoroughly outclassed and outmatched in skills, especially the aerial threat maintained by Sweden all around the match during every corner.

With this 5-0 humiliation at the hands of Sweden, Italy has played their worst FIFA Women’s World Cup defeat ever. Their only chances of keeping in the race for the trophy is trying to avoid a defeat in their upcoming last group stage match on Wednesday against South Africa.
