Real Betis 2-2 Barcelona: Blaugrana Win on Penalties to confirm El Classico clash in Cup final

In a tight necked semi-final of the Spanish Super Cup, both ends of Barcelona and Real Betis fought throughout to grab the position in the finals but after a really long match Barcelona emerged victorious on penalties over Betis.

Barcelona beat Real Betis on penalties

At the beginning of the match, it did not seem like the match would end up in a 2-2 dead-lock and that even the extra-time provided would not be enough and ultimately a penalty shootout would be required. But it happened and Real Betis proved to be quite a menace for Barcelona.

The scoreline would have been very different if not for the annoying VAR rule, Barcelona had netted the goal a total of four times throughout the match, one on the 22nd minute and another late in the game, but both were ruled offside by the VAR pushing the match ultimately into penalties.

Lewandowski and Ansu Fati score for Barcelona

Real Betis had grown slowly into the match after a slow but steady start and showed a lot of resistance to the fearsome Barcelona attack. However, Robert Lewandowski proved to be unstoppable and scored in the 40th minute to give Barcelona the lead.

The lead by Lewandowski was retained for almost entirety of the match, but owing some errors made by Ter Stegen and the Barca defense, Real Betis made a fierce comeback as Nabil Fekir scored an equalizer in the 77th minute and sent the match into extra-time.

However, Barcelona aren’t the ones to sit back and let others rule the pitch, and Ansu Fati score an early goal into the extra-time in the 93rd minute.

Ter Stegen makes 2 penalty saves

But Real Betis never stopped fighting for that spot in the final and Loren Moron brought the game back into level and equalized for Betis in the 101st minute of the match, and pushed the game into a penalty shootout.

As the match moved into a penalty shootout after a not so “best” game by Barcelona, Ter Stegen made a sensational performance by saving two important penalties, which paved the way for Barcelona into an El-Classico finals against Real Madrid after a 4-2 penalty win over Betis.
