The wait is over as RCB has finally announced their captain for the next season. Former South African captain Faf du Plessis will be taking charge of his new team as a captain.
It was on the minds of the fans for a long time. Knowing that Virat Kohli was not going to return as the captain of their favorite side, they wondered who would take the baton from him.
Although RCB had retained their seasoned campaigner in Glenn Maxwell, there were still some doubts regarding his appointment as the captain. Considering his good form and experience in the shortest format of the game, he was the biggest contender for the role.
The Mega Auction, however, changed the game completely. It was a shocker when CSK couldn’t retain Faf Du Plessis, and RCB bought him. Later they also bought Dinesh Karthik. So the speculations began whether DK would be the new captain.
On Saturday, the Bangalore franchise finally raised the curtain of the suspense. They shared a post on social media announcing the appointment of du Plessis as their captain.
Faf du Plessis has great record in IPL
The question that pesters RCB fans is whether their team’s fortune will change. Despite being captained by some of the greatest of the game, they have failed to win a single IPL trophy.
Faf du Plessis comes with an excellent reputation from the neighboring team of RCB. He has played 100 IPL games for CSK and Rising Pune Super Giants over the years.
He has scored almost 3000 runs in those 100 matches at an average of 34. What really stands out is his performance in the last season. He was almost the highest scorer of the tournament. He missed out on the orange cap by a slender margin.
Also, what he really brings with himself is the winning mentality. He has been a part of the last two title-winning campaigns for CSK. So, nobody knows better than him what it takes to get there.
Although it will not be easy for RCB fans to see Kohli play as a player and not as a captain. But they will be hoping to see him perform his best and expect the same from du Plessis and other new players who joined the squad.
The 15 edition of IPL starts off on the 26th of March. RCB will play their first match on the 27th against Punjab Kings.
