Raheem Sterling avoids ban after FA investigate Tottenham derby footage

Raheem Sterling has avoided a ban after Football Association (FA) investigated him for allegedly throwing an object back into the crowd at Tottenham.

Footage released on Chelsea’s TikTok account showed an object striking Cole Palmer in the leg after he equalised through a penalty.

After the players moved away, Sterling appeared to bend down to pick up and throw the item back into the crowd before joining his teammates.

The incident was not spotted by the officials, but it was reviewed to determine whether any action needs to be taken.

The 27-year-old was potentially in danger of missing either Chelsea’s upcoming home match against former club Manchester City or the trip to Newcastle after the international break, but has now been cleared with no action to be taken.

Spurs forward Richarlison was previously banned for one match for throwing a lit flare back into the crowd after scoring for his previous club, Everton, against Chelsea in May 2022.

Didier Drogba was also banned for three matches in 2008 after throwing a coin at Burnley supporters following a Carabao Cup loss.

Mauricio Pochettino addressed the incident in his pre-Manchester City press conference on Friday, before the judgement was handed out.

“I fear something, to be honest but we cannot find anything, and that is why we are quiet, calm and relaxed,” the Chelsea boss said.
