Pat Cummins of Australia has opted out of the 2023 Indian Premier League season

Kolkata Knight Riders, the two-time IPL winners, have been dealt a big setback with the withdrawal of renowned player Pat Cummins from the upcoming IPL season.

The Australia captain played the last three IPL seasons with the Kolkata Knight Riders, but his 2022 campaign was cut short due to a hip injury.

Due to a packed international schedule, Australia skipper Pat Cummins dropped out of the next 2023 edition of the India Premier League (IPL) on Tuesday. He became the league’s second overseas player to withdraw from the 16th season, following England’s Sam Billings, who announced his decision on Monday, citing his desire to focus on the lengthier format of the game.

Sam Billings also opts out of IPL 2023

“I’ve made the difficult decision to miss next year’s IPL. The international schedule is packed with Tests and ODI’s for the next 12 months, so will take some rest ahead of an Ashes series and World Cup. Thanks so much to @KKRiders for their understanding. Such a terrific team of players and staff and I hope I can get back there ASAP,” he tweeted.

The Kolkata Knight Riders have been one of the busiest teams in the transfer market. They acquired Lockie Ferguson and Rahmanullah Gurbaz from the Gujarat Titans, the 2022 season champions, before acquiring India pacer Shardul Thakur from the Delhi Capitals. They also gave Aman Khan to the Mumbai Indians.

There are speculations surrounding players such as Venkatesh Iyer, Varun Chakravarthy, and Shivam Mavi. Releasing these three players would free up about 24 crores.
