Fresh from his recent World Athletics Championships victory, Neeraj Chopra continued to shine at the Zurich Diamond League 2023. Despite finishing second in the javelin throw event, Neeraj showcased his exceptional skills with a best throw of 85.71m. The Czech Republic’s Jakub Vadlejch claimed the top spot with an 85.86m throw. Neeraj Chopra, with a personal best of 89.94m, demonstrated his remarkable talent on the field.

Neeraj Chopra’s performance in Zurich marked the end of his winning streak in the 2023 season. Before this event, he secured victories in the Diamond League legs in Doha and Lausanne, culminating in a historic gold medal at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest. Despite falling short in Zurich, Neeraj Chopra expressed his satisfaction with his performance and emphasized the importance of staying healthy for upcoming competitions.

In the men’s long jump event, Murali Sreeshankar delivered a notable performance, finishing fifth with an impressive jump of 7.99m. This marked his third appearance in the Diamond League this year, following a third-place finish in Paris and a fifth-place finish in Lausanne. Sreeshankar’s consistent showing in Zurich earned him four qualifying points, securing his spot in the Diamond League Final 2023. He joins Neeraj Chopra as the second Indian athlete to qualify for a Diamond League Final.

A Strong Start for Murali Sreeshankar

Murali Sreeshankar, with a personal best of 8.41m, made a strong start in Zurich with his first jump of 7.99m, leading the competition after the initial round. However, Greece’s Miltiadis Tentoglou, the reigning Olympic, world, and Diamond League champion, and other competitors challenged his position in subsequent rounds.

Sreeshankar’s performance in Zurich solidified his place in the Diamond League Final 2023, a significant achievement for the Indian long jumper. With only the top six athletes in each event earning a spot in the final, Sreeshankar’s consistent efforts have paid off, elevating him to the international athletics elite.
