Man City defender Benjamin Mendy found “not guilty” of 6 counts of rape

After nearly 5 months of court battle and  yearlong saga of allegation and denial, the English court on Wednesday ruled Benjamin Mendy of Manchester City as not guilty on the 6 rape charges levelled against him.

The case was being plead at the Chester Crown Court in Northwest England. And the 10 people jury present in the court couldn’t find enough evidence against the alleged crime. Hence, Mendy was ruled as not-guilty and discharged.

Benjamin Mendy ruled not guilty by Court

Benjamin Mendy and his friend Matturie were earlier were accused of raping women. They were said to be using Mendy’s home in Prestbury Cheshrire and a Manchester Flat for the deeds.

The BBC in a report published wrote, “the trial, involving money, sex and celebrity, had ‘all the makings of a good drama’, it came with a significant ‘plot twist’ – that the accused were innocent.”

The report further mentioned that the jurors considered long and hard before announcing a majority decision in the favor of the accused. Judge Steven Everett accepted a 10-1 majority verdict in the favor of Mendy.

Rape Accusations against Mendy

The Manchester City defender was first arrested for the crime in November 2020. However, there was no concrete evidence against him, hence he continued playing. But in August 2021 he was suspended when rape charges were levelled against him.

Following this, the club was quick to issue a statement in which they said, “Given there are open matters related to this case, the club is not in a position to comment further at this time.”

Now, nearly one and a half year later, Mendy has been cleared of the Sex attack charges against him. Although there are two more offenses levelled against him, the player will be looking to close them as well. And start his life afresh.
