Man City 4-0 Chelsea: Mahrez’s brace helps City knock Chelsea out of FA Cup

Chelsea finds themselves in deeper hole as another day, another match, and another result doesn’t goes in their way. Which ultimately results in a chance of winning a title has come to an end.

The London blues suffered another defeat by the hands of Man City in a span of 4 days. This time in the first fixture of their FA Cup, and have lost it by 4-0.

A beleaguered looking Chelsea team took to pitch against the defending Premier League Champions on Sunday looking for redemption for their EPL ousting. But all they got was another pounding by the heavy weights.

Manchester City was quick off the block in the game and maintained a steady pressure on Chelsea’s defense resulting in an opportunity in the form of a freekick. And Riyadh Mahrez converted it in 23rd minute to give his side the lead.

Manchester City off to flying start against Chelsea

Before Chelsea could have regrouped, they were handed down a harsh penalty. Owing to a slight flick of the hand, the referee pointed to the spot after checking with VAR. It was Kai Havertz who was found guilty of handling the ball hence a penalty was in order.

Julian Alvarez stepped up to take the spot kick and despite going the right way, Kepa couldn’t keep it out. And Manchester City was 2-0 up with just 30 minutes on board.

It seemed certain that this match was for Manchester City to win. That, however, didn’t flatter the players on the pitch nor the fans in the stadium. Known for winning big, City continued pressing at Chelsea’s goal and was rewarded soon.

This time it was some lovely linkup play between Silva, Mahrez, Walker, and eventually Foden that gave City a 3-0 lead with just 38 minutes in the first half.

In the second half Graham Potter tried to react to the score line. He removed players like Kai Havertz and Kovacic and replaced them with Denis Zakaria and David fofana, a debutant.

Things didn’t change much for them though. Chelsea kept getting battered around the park, and they had no place to hide.

Conner Gallagher was the only player on the pitch who tried to bring the attack to City’s box. But there was just nobody in the front three to apply the finishing touches.

On the other hand, Manchester City were awarded another spot kick at 85th minute. Mahrez converted it from the spot to give his side a 4-0 lead.

Chelsea was left battered and beaten on the Etihad pitch. Lacking key players they were no match for the Premier League giants and suffered a massive defeat.
