List of Double Centuries in ODI

Scoring a double century in ODI Cricket remains a milestone that only a few cricketers have achieved. Over the years, many batsmen have strived to put a mammoth 200 runs on the scoreboard in the ODI matches, some cricketers have made it seem easy as it remains a dream for hundreds of others. 

Among thousands of batsmen, playing the sport over the decades, only 10 knocks have witnessed this milestone. Out of these 10 brilliant double centuries in ODIs, seven were scored by Indian cricketers and all of them came by the opening batsmen. 

Only 8 batsmen have been a part of this feat while representing their respective countries and playing against multiple opponents in One-Day International cricket. 

Renowned batsmen such as MS Dhoni, Sourav Ganguly, Virat Kohli, Matthew Hayden, and Sanath Jayasuriya came close to achieving a double century in ODIs but unfortunately fell short of a few runs.

Rohit Sharma (264), (209) and (208*)

The current all format captain of the Indian cricket team and attacking opening batsman, Rohit Sharma has been phenomenal in the ODI format of the sport. While having numerous records under his name, Rohit Sharma has made unrealistic records in men’s ODI cricket by scoring the most number of Double Hundreds in ODIs and scoring the most number of runs in the short format. 

Rohit Sharma has doubled his hundred thrice in men’s ODI cricket. He has achieved this remarkable milestone once against Australia and twice against Sri Lanka at three Indian venues of Kolkata, Mohali and Bengaluru. 

Rohit Sharma scored his first century against Australia at the M. Chinnaswamy stadium, Bangalore in 2013 as he put 209 runs on the board while taking 158 deliveries with a strike rate of 132.27. Rohit is the only double centurion to have scored his 200 in ODI with a six. 

His next 200 in ODI against Sri Lanka on 13 November 2014, as ODIhe smashed the highest score in the ODI format of 264 runs while taking 173 deliveries with a strike rate of 152.60 as he hit 33 fours and nine sixes. Rohit didn’t spare the Sri Lankan bowlers again in 2017. His next double hundred in the ODIs witnessed a knock of 208* runs. 

Martin Guptill (237*)

The New Zealand opening batsman Martin Guptill has scored the second highest score with his double hundred in ODIs. Martin’s thrilling knock came against West Indies on 21 March 2015 during the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2015, in Wellington. 

Martin walked the crease as the opening batsman and thrashed the West Indies bowlers with 24 fours and 11 sixes. Martin Guptill’s knock ended as the team’s innings got over, and she walked back to the dugout with the score of 237* after playing 163 deliveries with a strike rate of 145.39. 

His score led New Zealand to a high total of 393 which seemed impossible for the batsmen of the West Indies to chase. Martin Guptill’s remarkable score is the only double century ever recorded during an ICC knockout game.

Virender Sehwag (219) 

The destructive opening batsman Virender Sehwag’s name in the list of Double Centuries in Men’s ODI Cricket is no surprise. Widely regarded as the most attacking batsman in the history of Indian cricket, Virender Sehwag has given the Indian cricket team some of the most noteworthy and thrilling innings. 

Virender Sehwag’s first ever double century in ODI over a decade ago in 2011. West Indies came for their tour to India and were not ready to witness Sehwag’s storm. 

Sehwag walked the crease as India chose to bat first in the Holkar Cricket Stadium, Indore and ended up with his first double hundred in ODI by scoring 219 runs over 149 deliveries with a strike rate of 146.97 as he smashed 25 fours and 7 sixes. 

After this match, Virender Sehwag became the second batsman to score a double century in an ODI. 

Chris Gayle (215) 

The universe boss, Christopher Henry Gayle, popularly known as Chris Gayle has left no stone unturned as he scored his double century in ODI. Gayle has tied with Sachin Tendulkar to have scored the second fastest 200 in ODI in 147 balls. 

Chris Gayle’s impeccable knock came against Zimbabwe as the teams played their Pool match for ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, 2015. West Indies chose to bat first and Chris Gayle scored the first ever double century in an ICC tournament. 

Gayle ended the team’s innings with a score of 215 while taking 147 deliveries with a strike rate of 146.25. Unlike the other batsmen in the list of Double Centuries in Men’s ODI Cricket who scored a lot of boundaries, Chris Gayle reached this milestone after smashing tons of sixes. To reach his double hundred in ODI, Gayle hit 10 fours and 16 sixes. 

Fakhar Zaman (210)

The Pakistani opening batsman Fakhar Zaman is next on the list of Double Centuries in Men’s ODI Cricket. Fakhar played his knock against Zimbabwe on Pakistan’s tour of Zimbabwe in 2018. 

Pakistan chose to bat first and Fakhar Zaman scored his first double century in ODI and ended the innings with a score of 210 after playing 156 deliveries with a strike rate of 134.61 after smashing 24 fours and 6 sixes. 

A few years ago in 2021, Fakhar Zaman unfortunately missed his second well deserved double century by just seven runs as he got dismissed for 193 against South Africa. 

Ishan Kishan (210) 

Ishan Kishan is the second youngest batsman in the list of Double Centuries in Men’s ODI Cricket. The attacking budding opening batsman, Ishan Kishan has scored the fastest double century in the history of men’s ODI cricket.

The Indian cricket team went on their tour in Bangladesh in 2022-23. The Indian team batted first and Ishan Kishan scored his first ever double hundred which became the fastest 200 in ODI. Ishan Kishan scored 210 runs in just 137 deliveries with a strike rate of 160.30 as he hit 24 fours and 10 sixes. 

Ishan’s knock was highly appreciated by his fellow teammate, Virat Kohli who also scored a century later in that match and the fellow squad member sitting in the dugout. 

Shubman Gill (208) 

The recent addition to the list of batsmen who have scored a double century in ODI is Shubman Gill. Shubman Gill is also the youngest batsman on the list of Double Centuries in Men’s ODI Cricket. The 23-year-old Indian opening batsman has recently made his double hundred in ODI for India in their game against New Zealand. 

New Zealand came to India for their tour and was not prepared to witness Shubman Gill’s brilliant double hundred. Gill scored his 208 on 18 January 2023 as he played 149 deliveries with a strike rate of 139.59 as he sent the ball for 19 boundaries and nine sixes. 

Sachin Tendulkar (200*) 

The Master blaster Sachin Tendulkar is the first ever batsman to have scored a double century in ODI. Over the years Sachin has been regarded as the most successful batsman in the history of cricket. His first double century gave other budding batsmen the hope to achieve this milestone. 

Sachin Tendulkar’s first double hundred came against South Africa in February 2010 as he smashed 200* runs in ODI for the first time after scoring numerous centuries. Sachin Tendulkar took 147 deliveries to unlock the milestone with a strike rate of 136.05 and hit 25 fours and three sixes.

Belinda Clark (229*)

Belinda Clark’s double century came in 1997 against Denmark in Mumbai. She scored 229 not out off 158 balls, hitting 24 fours and 2 sixes. Her innings helped Australia to a total of 385/3, which was the highest score in women’s ODI cricket at the time.

Clark’s double century was a watershed moment in women’s cricket. It showed that women were capable of scoring the same kinds of runs as men, and it helped to raise the profile of the game.

Amelia Kerr (232*)

Amelia Kerr’s double century came in 2018 against Ireland in Dublin. She scored 232 not out off 145 balls, hitting 31 fours and 2 sixes. Her innings helped New Zealand to a total of 360/3, which was the highest score in women’s ODI cricket at the time.

Kerr’s double century was even more impressive than Clark’s, as she achieved it in just 145 balls. She also became the youngest player, male or female, to score a double century in ODI cricket.
