Lionel Messi rules out returning to Europe to play for Barcelona again

In sports news football, Lionel Messi has ruled out a return to Europe to play again for his beloved club Barcelona, after a move fell through this summer.

The 36-year-old joined MLS side Inter Miami this summer after a return to Barca did not happen. Moreover, there has been plenty of rumours that Messi might join them on loan after the MLS season was over.

Nonetheless, Messi has denied these reports, and has also ruled out a move to Barcelona.

“No, no chance. Not at all,” he told L’Equipe. Thanks to God, I had an extraordinary career in Europe and won everything I have dreamed of.

“Now that I have decided to come to USA, I don’t think I will ever return to playing in Europe.”

Messi also admitted once again that he had thought about coming back to Barcelona last summer, but it just wasn’t meant to be.

“I could have returned to Barcelona, but it didn’t happen. It was similar to me having to leave in 2021,” he added.

“I thought about Barca return, my life there, retiring there as I always wanted but… it was not possible. I had many offers on the table this year… including multiple European clubs and Saudi Arabia. We decided to come to Miami, and it is a decision we are happy with, we feel good.”

Inter Miami failed to reach the MLS play-offs, meaning Messi won’t play competitive club football again until March.

However, a friendly celebrating his Golden Ball triumph is arranged for next week. There have been reports that Messi will return to his boyhood club Newell’s Old Boys, after his contract with Inter Miami expires in 2025.
