Koneru Humpy Secures Silver at Women’s World Rapid Chess Championships 2023

India’s leading woman chess player, Koneru Humpy, demonstrated exceptional prowess at the Women’s World Rapid Chess Championships 2023 in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. The tournament, held from December 26th to 28th, witnessed Humpy clinching the silver medal, marking another milestone in her illustrious career.

Top Finish After 11 Rounds

Koneru Humpy showcased her strategic brilliance, concluding the event’s 11 rounds at the top position with 8.5 points. Tied with Russia’s Anastasia Bodnaruk, Humpy engaged in a tie-breaker for the championship title. Despite a valiant effort, she lost 1.5-2.5, securing the prestigious silver medal. This marks her third medal from the Women’s World Rapid Chess Championships, following a gold in 2019 and a bronze in 2012.

In the classical games against the eventual champion Bodnaruk, Humpy held her ground, securing draws with black pieces. However, the blitz playoff posed a formidable challenge. Despite her resilience, Humpy couldn’t match the speed and precision of Bodnaruk, who emerged victorious in the sudden-death game after two draws and a loss.

Overall Indian Triumphs

Koneru Humpy wasn’t the sole Indian standout at the championship. Varshini showcased commendable performance, securing the 13th position in the women’s section with 7.5 points. In the men’s category, Vidit Gujrathi emerged as the highest-placed Indian player, finishing fourth with 9 points in 13 rounds. R Praganandha’s notable performance landed him in the 8th rank.

The undisputed king of rapid chess, Magnus Carlsen, added another feather to his cap by clinching the men’s title. Carlsen secured the world rapid chess crown for a remarkable fifth time. His stellar performance on the final day, scoring 3/4, included victories over Vladimir Fedoseev and Pouya Idani, along with draws against Vidit Gujrathi and Yu Yangyi. Carlsen’s total score of 10/13 outshone Fedoseev (9.5/13) and Yu Yangyi (9/13), securing his unparalleled dominance in rapid chess.
