Joao Cancelo: Portugal and FC Barcelona defender hits back at critics, saying his goal celebration was a “slap in the face”

Joao Cancelo has indicated that his celebration on scoring against Bosnia and Herzegovina was a “slap in the face” of critics who seem to downgrade his reputation. In latest football match news, Portugal maintained their perfect record in European Qualifiers as they have emerged victorious in eight of their games.

Joao Cancelo slams critics

Joao Cancelo, the former Manchester City outcast, has been instrumental in spearheading Barcelona’s wingback position, and it is reported that Culers are content in finding one of their perfect predecessors in right-back spot, long after Dani Alves. His addition has bolstered the wings for Xavi, as he has stamped his name on the roster for a start in every game. But, recently, he was involved in a brawl with autograph hunters, an event which seemed to have garnered a lot of controversy few weeks ago.

What Happened?

It was reported that Cancelo has been the eye of controversy few weeks ago as he was observingly frustrated at autograph hunters, who were regular visitors at the training ground. After he was mocked for his rude attitude towards fans, the Portuguese claimed that some people would sell out his signed memorabilia- a practice which he strongly detests. But, as the norm stands, several top football players use a different way to shut their critics up, and Cancelo was not an exception to these, as he allowed his feet to do the talking when he scored a brilliant goal in Portugal’s win against Bosnia. He received the ball at the edge of the box, before firing that shot towards top corner, thus rounding off his strike with a celebration comprising sliding towards the corner flag with hands flayed.

“A slap in the face”

Cancelo said whether his celebration was a hit back at critics or not, as he was heard saying, “My celebration was a slap in the face to those who criticize me. I was always professional. There are those who sell a bad image of me, but it is not true. I have a good heart and I do everything I can to help Portugal.”

Cancelo seems to have revived his career under Xavi as he is playing in his favored position, thus scoring and assisting goals on a freebie, thus providing an impetus to his career. He scored his third goal of the season, having already netting twice with the Catalan giants. After a successful international stint with Portugal, Cancelo is set to return with Barcelona for their fixture against Athletic Bilbao, as the defending champions would look to return to winning ways.
