IPL Winners List overview of last 5 years

The year 2023 once again belonged to Chennai Super Kings. Also known as the comeback kings in IPL. This time they finished another fairytale return in IPL by winning the tournament after finishing 9th in the 2022 edition of the tournament. They defeated the defending champions in final in a last ball thriller to go level on most IPL titles won by a team.

Gujarat Tians are the latest addition to the IPL Winners List. In the year 2022, playing in their first tournament, they defeated an adamant-looking Rajasthan Royals to claim their first title of the season. It was truly a historic moment for the fans of Gujarat Titans, and now they will be hoping for a repeat of this feat in the second season.

The year 2021 belonged to the old lion, Chennai Super Kings, as they etched their name in the IPL Winners List for the fourth time in the history of the tournament. With this win, they became the second team after Mumbai Indians to win the tournament 4 times. They defeated KKR by 27 runs to make a great comeback after a tormenting 2020 season.

Mumbai Indians created history in the year 2020. They became the first team to win the tournament for a record fifth time this year. Defeating Delhi Capitals, making their first appearance in the IPL final, they entered their name in the IPL Winners List. Rohit Sharma became the first player to captain a team to 5 title wins and win 6 IPL titles as a player.

In 2019, Mumbai Indians extended their reign on the Indian Premier League Winners List by becoming the first team to win the title for a 4th time in the history of the tournament. They defeated their arch nemesis Chennai Super Kings by the barest margin of 1 run in the last ball of the final over to win the title. It was one of the most competitive matches between the two teams.

2018 was a year of the comeback for the Chennai Super Kings. Heading into the tournament after a hiatus of 2 years, the onus was on them to give something to their fans to cheer about. And the franchise didn’t let them down at all. CSK managed to not only reach the final by winning it as well by defeating the favorite title SRH in their second final in 3 years.

Most IPL title-winning team

  • Mumbai Indians 5 titles

There is no doubt in the fact that Mumbai Indians are the most successful team in the IPL. This is proven by the fact that they are also the most IPL title-winning team in the history of the tournament.

Starting in 2013 against Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians has won the IPL title on five occasions. And all of these titles came under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, the current Indian captain.

What’s even more exciting is the fact that they are also the only team to defeat Chennai Super Kings twice in the IPL final. Mumbai Indians defeated Chennai Super Kings in the first title charge in 2013, and then in their historic triumph of 2019, they once again defeated Chennai by a margin of 1 run. Hence becoming the most successful team in the history of IPL.

They have had a couple of bad seasons in IPL, failing to even qualify for the playoffs in 2021 and 2022. But their fans will be hopeful of seeing their side reach the finals of the 2023 season and win the title as well.

  • Chennai Super Kings 5 titles

The Indian Premier League in recent years has become a 2 horse race, with Chennai Super Kings challenging Mumbai Indians to become the most IPL title-winning team.

Currently, they have a total of 4 titles to their name, which is one less than the number upheld by Mumbai Indians against their name. But that doesn’t discount the fact that CSK is one of the most successful teams in the history of the tournament.

They have reached the finals of the tournament for most times. Following their defeat in the inaugural final against Rajasthan Royals, they went on to lose on four other occasions, twice against Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians, respectively.

Yet, what makes this team so great is that they have still managed to win a total of 4 titles, which means that they could have had 9 out of the 15 titles up for grabs, despite the fact that they didn’t even feature in 2 seasons.

This shows that there is no contention to the fact that Chennai Super Kings indeed, is the most successful team in the history of IPL. Although they have one less IPL title than Mumbai Indians, their dominance in the history of the tournament is simply unmatched.

  • Kolkata Knight Riders 3 titles

KKR is the only team after Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians to have won the trophy more than once. And hence they find a place in this list of most IPL title-winning team.

The KKR team has created buzz ever since their first game of the IPL, in which Brandon McCallum’s blistering knock set the stage for the tournament. But post that win; the KKR team failed to capitalize on the tournament.

The first time they reached the final was in the fifth edition of the tournament in 2012. In that year, they denied Chennai super kings the opportunity to win three titles in a row. And won the maiden title themselves.

Then two years later, they were once again in the final. This time they defeated another first-time finalist in the form of Kings XI Punjab to claim their first title. However, that was the highest summit they were going to climb for the rest of the decade.

After the 2014 triumph, they failed to make anything big in the IPL. That was until 2021 they found themselves once again in the final, but this time CSK had their revenge and won the fourth title of IPL.

KKR will be looking for a resurrection in the upcoming season.
