India’s Men’s Relay Team Joins TOPS Program Ahead of Paris Olympics

India’s men’s relay team has achieved a significant milestone on their path to the upcoming Paris Olympics by gaining entry into the prestigious Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS). This remarkable accomplishment follows their outstanding performance at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, where they not only made history but also solidified their position among the world’s elite athletes.

A Record-Breaking Relay Team

Comprising the talented quartet of Amoj Jacob, Muhammad Ajmal, Muhammad Anas Yahiya, and Rajesh Ramesh, India’s men’s 4x400m relay team etched their names in the annals of Asian athletics by setting a new continental record. Competing against the world’s finest athletes, they delivered a remarkable performance, clocking a blistering time of less than 3 minutes.

The team is currently back at their training base in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, where they continue to fine-tune their skills and sharpen their competitive edge. Joining them on this remarkable journey are two other exceptional athletes, Mijo Chacko Kurian and Arul Rajalingham, completing the relay squad.

This remarkable feat has been made possible through the unwavering support of the Sports Authority of India (SAI), which has recently approved funding for the team through the Mission Olympic Cell. As part of the TOPS program, these athletes will receive specialized training and valuable international exposure through global trips.

World Championships Success

The Indian government has also committed to covering equipment costs, ensuring the athletes are in peak physical condition, and facilitating their participation in prestigious international tournaments.

At the World Championships, India’s men’s relay team showcased their mettle by clocking an impressive time of 2 minutes and 59.05 seconds during the heats, earning them a well-deserved second-place finish behind the USA. This outstanding performance not only secured them a spot in the World Championships final but also saw them shatter the Asian record previously held by Japan.

In the championship final, the Indian relay team delivered yet another scintillating performance, crossing the finish line in an astounding 2 minutes and 59.92 seconds. This remarkable achievement secured them a fifth-place finish on the global stage and, in the process, eclipsed the national record set in 2021. The team’s dedication and hard work have undoubtedly set the stage for a promising journey towards the Paris Olympics, representing India with pride and determination.
