Indian Railways emerges as champions of Senior Women One Day Trophy for the 14th time

On Tuesday, Indian Railways have claimed their 14th Senior Women One Day Trophy. Led by Pooman Yadav, Railways reached the feat by defeating Karnataka by four wickets in the final played at JSCA International Stadium Complex, Ranchi.

Railways Women had entered the final on the back of their 17-run win over Uttarakhand Women in the semi-finals. Meanwhile, Karnataka Women beat Rajasthan Women by 57 runs in the other semi-final to reach the grand finale.

The fourteen time champion Railways had former India captain Mithali Raj mentoring the side.

Moreover, Rajasthan’s Jasia Akhtar with her 501 gross runs became the highest run scorer of Senior Women One Day Trophy 2023. While Delhi’s young spinner Parunika Sisodia equated Poonam Yadav to share the rank for the highest wicket-taker in the tournament.

After winning the toss, captain Poonam invited Karnataka to bat first. The much experienced Railways’ bowling department bowled exceptionally well, resulting Karnataka could only put up a meagre total of 163 runs, losing all their wickets. For Karnataka, G Divya scored the highest of 67 runs. Apart form her, only C Prathyusha looked to have understood her opposition’s master plan. However, even she couldn’t take her team to a defendable total in a 50-over game.

Chasing 164, none of Railway’s players could put up a big score. Nonetheless, the little contributions by Renuka Chaudhari, Mona, T Sarkar, D Hemalatha, and Tanuja P Kanwer, helped the team cross the winning rope with four wickets and 2.3 overs in hand. However, Karnataka’s bowling attack should receive a well- deserved round of applause as they pretty much hid the paltry made by their other department.
